What does my wrestler need for practice?
Wrestling practice is fun and very active. Wrestlers will run, jump, roll and of course wrestle with others and should dress for movement.
Shorts and a T shirt are best for wrestling practice. Shorts/sweats should not have pockets as there is a risk of catching and bending fingers in them. Hoodies are not recommended for the same reasons. Wrestling singlets are not required for practices and are usually reserved for competition.
Wrestling shoes are a sport specific footwear with a soft flexible sole that allows traction on the wrestling mat without damaging it. Wrestling shoes can be purchased at sporting good stores such as sport check as well as on Amazon. We also have some wrestling shoes (new and used) available for rental or purchase (subject to availability). Wrestling in socks is the next best alternative if wrestling shoes are not available.
Shoes may be rented for $20.00 per pair.
Used shoes may be purchased for $40.00 per pair
New shoes may be purchased for $70.00 per pair.
Additional protective gear is optional. Wrestling is a very active contact sport. Some wrestlers choose to wear a mouth guard for teeth protection. In growing children and teens, an off the shelf "boil and bite" mouth guard is a cost effective and good option. These can be purchased online or in local sporting good stores such as Sportcheck or Happy's. Some wrestlers choose to wear a headgear to protect their ears. This is less commonly used in freestyle wrestling (the International style practiced in Canada) than is some other folk styles of wrestling (like in the USA). Because of this, these can be hard to find locally, and likely need to be purchased online. Knee pads are sometimes used by wrestlers on their shooting knee to reduce bruising from taking wrestling shots. Locally, these can be found in sporting good store, especially in the volleyball section as well as online.
